About this product

The Biko Brace is a specialist walking aid developed by Ortocanis, designed to support dogs affected by ataxia, degenerative myelopathy, IVDD, or other conditions that cause hind limb weakness and poor coordination. Rather than simply supporting body weight, the Biko works as a gait correction device — using elastic straps to gently propel the hindlimb forward in sync with your dog's natural stride, reducing paw dragging and knuckling with every step.

Attaching to a standard chest harness (sold separately), the brace harnesses the forward momentum of your dog's front limbs to assist and guide the hind legs. This makes it a valuable tool not just for daily walks, but as part of a structured rehabilitation programme. Over time, it can help maintain muscle condition, improve proprioception, and keep neurological dogs moving independently for longer.

Fabricated from durable, lightweight materials, the Biko Brace is built for regular use without causing unnecessary bulk or restriction. It is suitable for medium to large breed dogs and comes in a range of sizes to ensure a precise, comfortable fit. As with all orthopaedic aids, we recommend using the Biko under the guidance of your vet or a qualified veterinary physiotherapist to get the best results for your dog.

Instructions for use

1. Ensure your dog is fitted with a well-fitting chest harness before attaching the Biko Brace. The harness is not included and must be purchased separately.
2. Measure your dog carefully using the Ortocanis sizing guide and select the correct brace size before use.
3. Attach the elastic straps of the Biko Brace to the chest harness and around the hindlimbs as directed in the fitting instructions provided with the product.
4. Check that all straps are secure but not overly tight — you should be able to fit two fingers beneath each strap.
5. Begin with short, supervised walks of 10 to 15 minutes, allowing your dog time to adjust to the sensation of the brace.
6. Gradually increase session length as your dog builds confidence and strength, ideally under guidance from a veterinary physiotherapist.
7. Always supervise your dog while the brace is in use. Remove the brace after each session and check the skin beneath the straps for any signs of rubbing or irritation.
8. Do not leave the brace on an unsupervised or resting dog.

Skin & allergy support

Skin & allergies FAQs

Helpful answers for choosing gentle skin, itch and allergy support for your dog.

What conditions is the Biko Brace suitable for?

The Biko Brace is designed for dogs experiencing hind limb weakness or coordination problems due to ataxia, degenerative myelopathy (DM), degenerative disc disease (IVDD), or other neurological deficits. It is particularly helpful for dogs that drag their paws or knuckle when walking. If you are unsure whether it is right for your dog, we recommend consulting your vet or a veterinary physiotherapist before purchasing.

Do I need anything else to use the Biko Brace?

Yes. The Biko Brace attaches to a standard chest harness, which is not included with the brace. You will need a well-fitting, secure chest harness before use. The brace uses elastic straps to connect the harness to your dog's hindlimbs, so the fit of the harness is important for the brace to work correctly. Please check the sizing guide and consult your vet or rehab therapist if needed.

How do I choose the right size for my dog?

Sizing is based on your dog's weight and body measurements, including hindlimb length. Ortocanis provides a detailed sizing guide — we strongly recommend measuring your dog carefully before ordering, as an incorrect fit will reduce the effectiveness of the brace. If you are between sizes or unsure, please contact our team and we will help you select the best fit for your dog.

How long should my dog wear the Biko Brace each day?

The Biko Brace is intended for use during supervised walks and physiotherapy sessions — it is not designed to be worn continuously or left on unsupervised. Most dogs start with short sessions of 10 to 15 minutes and gradually increase as they build confidence and muscle strength. Always monitor your dog for any signs of rubbing, discomfort, or fatigue, and remove the brace immediately if any issues arise. Guidance from a veterinary physiotherapist is recommended.
