What is spondylosis?
Over time, bony bridges (osteophytes) can form between the vertebrae of the spine, usually as a response to ageing and wear. In many dogs they’re an incidental finding on an x-ray. In others, they reduce the spine’s flexibility and cause stiffness or discomfort.
Signs it might be bothering your dog
Because it develops slowly, signs are easy to put down to ageing.
- Stiffness, especially after rest or in cold weather
- Reduced flexibility — turning or twisting less easily
- Reluctance to jump or climb
- A slightly stiff or 'roached' posture
Keeping the spine supple
Gentle, regular movement and good support are the cornerstones of management.
- Little-and-often exercise to keep the back mobile
- A supportive orthopaedic bed and warm rest areas
- Ramps to avoid jarring the spine jumping on and off furniture
- Keep your dog lean to reduce strain
- Joint and mobility support as part of a routine
