Helping Dogs with Firework and Noise Fear

7 min read Vet-informed guidance

For a lot of dogs, fireworks season is genuinely frightening. Noise phobias are common, and a scared dog can’t simply be told not to worry. But with preparation and the right support, you can make loud nights far less distressing. Here’s how.

Why noises frighten dogs

Dogs have far more sensitive hearing than us, and sudden, unpredictable loud noises like fireworks or thunder can trigger a genuine fear response. Some dogs are naturally more sensitive, and fear can build over time if scary experiences aren’t managed.

Signs of noise fear

Fear shows up physically and behaviourally.

  • Trembling, panting or drooling
  • Hiding, pacing or trying to escape
  • Clinginess or seeking reassurance
  • Barking, whining or refusing to go outside
  • Destructive behaviour in a panic

Preparing and helping

Set up a safe haven and plan ahead.

  • Create a cosy den where your dog feels secure
  • Close curtains and put on background noise to muffle bangs
  • Stay calm and reassuring — never punish fearful behaviour
  • Use calming aids or a pressure vest, starting before the noise
  • Walk and toilet before dark on firework nights

When to see your vet. If your dog’s noise fear is severe or worsening, speak to your vet or a behaviourist ahead of firework season — they can advise on a longer-term desensitisation plan and, where needed, medication that calming aids work alongside.
