About this product

When your dog's back legs start to let them down, the Ortocanis Rear Support Harness gives them — and you — a much-needed helping hand. Designed by Ortocanis, Europe's leading veterinary orthopaedics brand, this lightweight harness wraps securely around the hindquarters, allowing you to provide gentle, controlled support as your dog stands, walks, or navigates stairs and uneven ground.

It is particularly well suited to dogs living with hip dysplasia, hip arthritis, hip instability, ataxia, motor incoordination, or general muscle and joint weakness in the hind legs. Rather than repeatedly bending down to manually lift or steady your dog — which puts strain on both of you — the harness gives you a comfortable handle to guide and support their rear end with confidence.

The design is low-profile and breathable, minimising pressure on sensitive joints while keeping your dog as comfortable as possible during use. Adjustable straps ensure a secure, custom fit across a range of body shapes and sizes, and the whole harness can be put on and removed quickly — which matters when your dog is already struggling.

Recommended by vets and veterinary physiotherapists across Europe, this is a practical, dignified solution for dogs whose mobility has been affected by age, injury, or chronic condition — helping them stay active, engaged, and connected to the life they love.

Instructions for use

1. Stand your dog and lift their tail gently. Slide the harness loops around both hind legs, positioning the padded section underneath the belly just in front of the hindquarters. 2. Fasten and adjust the straps so the harness sits snugly without pinching — you should be able to slide two fingers under any strap. 3. Lift the handle to provide rear support as your dog stands or walks. Use a front lead or collar alongside the harness for full directional control. 4. Remove the harness after each use and inspect your dog's skin for any signs of rubbing or irritation. 5. Do not leave the harness on unsupervised or during rest.

Skin & allergies FAQs

Helpful answers for choosing gentle skin, itch and allergy support for your dog.

How do I find the right size for my dog?

Measure around your dog's waist just in front of the hind legs, then refer to the Ortocanis size guide included with the product and available on the product page. If your dog falls between sizes, we generally recommend sizing up for comfort. A well-fitted harness should feel snug but allow you to slide two fingers underneath.

Can my dog wear this harness all day?

The harness is designed for use during activity — walks, trips to the garden, and assisted movement around the home. It is not recommended to leave it on unsupervised or overnight, as prolonged wear without monitoring can cause rubbing or discomfort. Always check the skin beneath the harness daily for any signs of irritation.

Is this harness suitable for dogs recovering from surgery?

Yes, the Ortocanis Rear Support Harness is widely used as a rehabilitation aid following orthopaedic surgery such as hip replacements, femoral head osteotomy, or cruciate ligament repair. We always recommend consulting your vet or veterinary physiotherapist before use post-surgery to ensure it is appropriate for your dog's specific recovery plan.

How do I clean the harness?

The harness can be hand washed in warm water with a mild detergent. Avoid bleach or fabric softeners, as these can degrade the materials over time. Allow to air dry fully before use. Do not tumble dry or iron.
