Cracked Paw Pads in Dogs: Care and Prevention

5 min read Vet-informed guidance

Your dog’s paw pads take a daily battering — hot pavements, icy ground, rough terrain and harsh chemicals all take their toll. Dry, cracked pads are sore and can let in infection. A little care keeps them soft, healthy and resilient.

Why pads crack

Pads can dry out and crack from hot or cold surfaces, walking on rough ground, contact with salt or chemicals, or simply age. Some dogs are more prone than others, and very dry pads can split and become painful or infected.

Signs to look for

Check the pads regularly, especially after tough walks.

  • Dry, rough or flaky pads
  • Visible cracks or splits
  • Limping or licking at the paws
  • Redness or soreness in the cracks

Care and prevention

Moisturise, protect and avoid the worst surfaces.

  • Apply a soothing paw balm to soften and protect pads
  • Rinse and dry paws after walks on salted or gritted roads
  • Avoid hot pavements in summer — walk early or late
  • Keep the fur between pads trimmed
  • Build up tough terrain gradually rather than all at once

When to see your vet. See your vet if cracks are deep, bleeding, or look infected, or if your dog is lame — sore pads sometimes need treatment as well as good home care.

Yes — hot surfaces can burn pads. As a rule, if it’s too hot for the back of your hand for seven seconds, it’s too hot for paws.
Yes — cold, salted and gritted surfaces dry pads out, so balm and rinsing paws after walks both help.
