The same splint fits the carpus at the front and the metatarsus at the back. Measure whichever joint needs the support and size from that.

The single aluminium splint is malleable, so it shapes to the line of your dog's leg by hand rather than forcing the leg to fit a fixed curve.

Supports a dropping or unstable wrist or lower back joint, with a shapeable splint that bends to your dog's leg.

With your dog standing and weight on the leg, slide the splint on so the joint sits centrally.
Fasten the upper strap first, then the lower.
Snug, not tight. You should get two fingers under any strap.
If the aluminium splint isn't sitting flush, take it out and bend it gently by hand, a little at a time.
Check the paw stays a normal colour and temperature. A cool or swollen paw means it's too tight.
Build up wearing time over a week rather than going straight to all-day use.

A splint supports a joint. It doesn't fix what's causing the problem, so keep your vet in the loop — particularly if your dog is in pain, the limb is swollen, or things are getting worse rather than better.

Build up wearing time gradually. Start with short sessions and check the skin underneath every time you take it off.
Watch the paw below the splint for swelling, coolness or colour change — all signs it's too tight.
Stop and reassess if you find rubbing, hair loss or broken skin.
Take the splint off overnight unless your vet has told you otherwise.
For dogs under two years old, use in balanced intervals so growth isn't affected.

Hand wash in cool water with mild soap and air dry away from direct heat. Don't tumble dry, and don't put it on a radiator — heat distorts the shaping and the velcro.

It comes down to severity. The Splint handles mild to moderate laxity and instability. For severe front-leg hyperextension or hyperflexion — where the paw is genuinely collapsing rather than just dropping — Balto direct you to the Bone instead, which is a fracture brace and gives far more rigid support.

Carpal laxity in growing puppies is common and often improves with controlled exercise, the right surface underfoot and temporary support. Speak to your vet first — in young dogs the usual advice is short, balanced periods in a splint rather than continuous wear, so growth isn't affected.

Build up to it rather than starting there, and take it off overnight unless your vet says otherwise. Check the paw below the splint each time it comes off — swelling, coolness or a colour change means it's fastened too tightly.

Only if both are affected — each splint is sold singly. Laxity often shows up in both front legs at once, so it's worth checking the other side properly rather than assuming it's one-sided.
