Size guide

Getting the fit right

Sized on your dog's height at the withers — the top of the shoulders — rather than on any leg measurement.

Not sure which size? 2 quick questions and we'll tell you which size — and why.

How to measure

  1. Height at the withersWith your dog standing square, measure from the top of the shoulders to the floor.
  2. Body weightWeigh your dog as a cross-check.

Size chart

SizeHeight at withersWeight
XX-Small up to 25.4 cm up to 4.5 cm
X-Small 25.4 – 45.7 cm 4.5 – 9.1 cm
Small 45.7 – 61.0 cm 9.1 – 18.1 cm
Medium 61.0 – 76.2 cm 20.4 – 47.6 cm
Large 76.2 – 100.0 cm 49.9 – 79.4 cm
Height at the withers is the measurement Balto size on. Note that Balto publish figures for four of the five sizes; the XX-Small bands below are our estimate, so please check with us before ordering that size.

Why it works

What makes this different

01

Stiffeners you can add or remove

Internal stiffeners let you increase or decrease the compression, so one brace covers both the painful early weeks and the longer-term management.

02

Optional hobble strap

Included in the box. Holds the front legs at shoulders' width to stop an unstable joint swinging outwards — use it only if your vet agrees it suits the condition.

03

Compresses both shoulders

The shoulder has nothing below it to anchor to, so the brace works across both sides at once — which also makes it genuinely useful for bilateral arthritis.

04

Sized on height, not leg width

Balto size the Lux on height at the withers, because the brace has to reach over the shoulders and around the chest rather than wrap a limb.

The details

Everything you need to know

From what's inside to how it arrives — open any section below for the full picture on Balto® Lux – Shoulder Brace.

Compresses both shoulders at once, with removable stiffeners to dial the support up or down and an optional hobble strap for an unstable joint.

  • With your dog standing, position the brace so the padded sections sit over both shoulder joints.
  • Fasten around the chest first, then adjust the shoulder straps evenly on both sides.
  • Snug, not tight. You should get two fingers under any strap.
  • Add or remove the internal stiffeners depending on how much compression your dog needs — more in the acute phase, less for long-term management.
  • Only fit the hobble strap if your vet or physio has agreed it's appropriate. Introduce it indoors and watch how your dog moves before going out.
  • Check the armpits every time the brace comes off — that's where rubbing shows up first.

A brace supports a joint. It doesn't fix what's causing the problem, so keep your vet in the loop — particularly if your dog is in pain, the shoulder is swollen, or things are getting worse rather than better.

  • The hobble strap changes how your dog walks. Check it's appropriate for their specific condition before using it, and never leave it on unsupervised.
  • Build up wearing time gradually and check the skin, especially in the armpits, every time it comes off.
  • Stop and reassess if you find rubbing, hair loss or broken skin.
  • Take the brace off overnight unless your vet has told you otherwise.
  • For dogs under two years old, use in balanced intervals so growth isn't affected.

Hand wash in cool water with mild soap and air dry away from direct heat. Don't tumble dry, and don't put it on a radiator — heat distorts the shaping and the velcro.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Ask your vet or physiotherapist first. It limits how far the front legs can move apart, which protects a genuinely unstable or dislocating shoulder — but it also changes your dog's gait, and restricting abduction isn't right for every shoulder problem. If you do use it, introduce it indoors and watch how your dog moves before going out.

Honestly, you often can't from the outside — front-end lameness from the shoulder, elbow and neck can look very similar, and dogs are good at hiding which bit hurts. It's worth getting the diagnosis confirmed before buying a brace for a specific joint, because the wrong brace won't help and delays getting the right one on.

Balto's published chart covers four of the five sizes, and the XX-Small isn't on it. The bands shown here for that size are our own estimate based on where it sits below the X-Small. If your dog is small enough to be near that size, get in touch before ordering and we'll confirm with the supplier rather than guessing.

Build up to it rather than starting there, and take it off overnight unless your vet says otherwise. Check the armpits each time it comes off — on a brace that wraps the chest, that's where rubbing appears first.
