Getting the tension right is the whole job. The aim is to limit outward movement, not to strap the legs together — your dog should still be able to walk with a normal gait.

Fit a cuff to each back leg, positioned above the hock.
Connect the strap and set the length so the legs sit at a natural shoulder-width stance.
Watch several steps. If the gait looks cramped, lengthen it; if the legs still slide outwards, shorten it a little.
Ask your vet or physiotherapist to check your setting on the first fit.
For swimmer puppies, pair with non-slip flooring — the hobble can't work on a surface with no grip.
Re-check the fit weekly on a growing puppy.

A hobble restricts how your dog moves, so it needs supervising. Never leave a hobbled dog unattended, on stairs, or anywhere they could fall and be unable to right themselves.

Use in balanced intervals rather than continuously, particularly on a growing puppy.
Check the skin under both cuffs every time it comes off.
Re-check the strap length regularly on a puppy — what fits this week won't fit next month.
Stop and reassess if the gait looks cramped or your dog seems unable to balance.
Consult your vet before use in dogs under two years old.
