Getting the fit right

Sized on the thigh circumference and the length from knee to hock. Both matter on a hinged brace — the hinge has to line up with the joint.

How to measure

You set the range of motion

A locking external hinge holds the knee anywhere from fully immobilised to a controlled arc. Full lock is 30° flexion / 30° extension; reduced range for rehab is 75° / 30°.

Four splints, properly braced

Four aircraft-aluminium splints surround the knee. They aren't removable like the Jump's, but they are adjustable, so the frame can be shaped to the leg.

A hinged knee brace that lets you set exactly how far the joint is allowed to bend — from full immobilisation to a controlled range for rehab.

Set the hinge before the brace goes anywhere near your dog. Balto give two reference settings: 30° flexion / 30° extension for full immobilisation, usually pre- or post-surgery, and 75° flexion / 30° extension for reduced range of motion during rehabilitation.

Ask your vet or physiotherapist which setting to use and when to move between them. This is the one part of the brace you shouldn't guess at.

With your dog standing, position the brace so the hinge sits level with the knee joint.
Fasten the upper padding strap first, then the lower, then the anchor.
Snug, not tight. You should get two fingers under any strap.
Trim the straps to length once you're confident in the fit — cut a little at a time, you can't put it back.
Watch the first few minutes of walking. The hinge should track with the knee, not sit forward or behind it.

A brace supports a joint. It doesn't fix what's causing the problem, so keep your vet in the loop — particularly if your dog is in pain, the limb is swollen, or things are getting worse rather than better.

Build up wearing time gradually. Start with short sessions and check the skin underneath every time you take it off.
Stop and reassess if you find rubbing, hair loss, swelling or broken skin.
Take the brace off overnight unless your vet has told you otherwise.
Never leave a braced dog unsupervised on a lead or in a crate.
For dogs under two years old, use in balanced intervals so growth isn't affected.

Hand wash in cool water with mild soap and air dry away from direct heat. Don't tumble dry, and don't put it on a radiator — heat distorts the shaping and the velcro.

Frequently asked questions

Both stabilise the knee, but they do different jobs. The Jump compresses and supports, and its splints come out — better for ongoing management, arthritis, and keeping an active dog going. The Ligatek controls how far the joint is allowed to bend — better for post-surgical protection and staged rehab, where someone needs to dictate the range of motion rather than just support it. If your vet has given you a rehab protocol with degrees in it, you want the Ligatek.

Ask your vet or physiotherapist — genuinely. The setting depends on what was done to the knee and how far into recovery your dog is, and getting it wrong in either direction sets things back. Balto supply two reference settings and the kit to change between them, but the decision isn't one to make from a product page.

No. The Ligatek's four splints are fixed, though they can be adjusted and shaped. If you want a brace you can strip back to a plain compression sleeve later on, that's the Balto Jump instead.

Size up, then trim the straps to fit. On a hinged brace the knee-to-hock length matters as much as the thigh circumference, because the hinge has to sit level with the joint — so if the two measurements point at different sizes, go with the one that gets the hinge in the right place and ask us if you're unsure.
