Three splints, one shapeable

Two angled aluminium splints stop the hock rolling sideways. The third sits at the front and is malleable, so you can bend it to match the line of your dog's leg.

Take the splints out later

Once the joint is steadier, remove the splints and the brace works as a compression sleeve — which is what helps most with arthritis and arthrosis.

Keeps dressings where they belong

Worn over a bandage it shields the wound from licking, biting and friction, which is often the hardest part of hock wound care.

Non-neoprene throughout

Neoprene traps bacteria, gives less support and degrades. Balto use a ventilated non-neoprene fabric that breathes and keeps its shape wash after wash.

Steadies a weak or injured hock, with three shapeable splints you can take out once the joint settles.

With your dog standing and weight on the leg, slide the brace up so the joint sits centrally in it.
Fasten the upper strap first, then the lower.
Snug, not tight. You should get two fingers under any strap.
Shape the front splint gently by hand if it isn't sitting flush against the leg.
For arthritis or arthrosis, take all three splints out and use it purely for compression.
Watch the first few minutes of walking. The brace should stay put rather than rotating around the leg.

A brace supports a joint. It doesn't fix what's causing the problem, so keep your vet in the loop — particularly if your dog is in pain, the limb is swollen, or things are getting worse rather than better.

Build up wearing time gradually. Start with short sessions and check the skin underneath every time you take it off.
Stop and reassess if you find rubbing, hair loss, swelling or broken skin.
Take the brace off overnight unless your vet has told you otherwise.
Never leave a braced dog unsupervised on a lead or in a crate.
For dogs under two years old, use in balanced intervals so growth isn't affected.

Hand wash in cool water with mild soap and air dry away from direct heat. Don't tumble dry, and don't put it on a radiator — heat distorts the shaping and the velcro.

Both support the tarsus. The Hock stabilises and compresses, and its splints come out — good for ongoing support, arthritis, and protecting a dressing. The Flexor adds an adjustable hinge so the range of motion can be set and limited, which is what a structured post-surgical plan usually needs. If your vet has given you degrees to work to, get the Flexor.

No — it's shaped for the hock, which is a back-leg joint. The front-leg equivalents are the Balto Joint for carpal compression and the Balto Splint for carpal laxity.

That's the intention — it stabilises without immobilising. Most dogs walk fairly normally within a few minutes, though expect some high-stepping at first while they work out what's on their leg. Keep the first few outings short and on the lead.

Size up. The straps let you pull a slightly large brace in, but a small one can't be made bigger. Go by the circumference above the hock rather than by weight — Balto's weight bands are broad and two dogs the same weight can have very different legs.
